Westermo Introduces Next-Generation Wi-Fi 7 Access Points for Onboard Rail: Ibex-1520 and Ibex-3520
Västerås, Sweden, December 16, 2025 – Westermo announces the launch of the Ibex-1520 and Ibex-3520 Wi-Fi 7 access points, designed to meet the growing demand for high-speed, secure, and reliable connectivity in rail environments, combining next-generation technology with rugged reliability and advanced security features.

Next-Generation Technology for Rail

The new Ibex series leverages the latest Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be) standard to deliver the highest performance in mission-critical rail applications. The Ibex-1520 is a dual-band WLAN access point supporting 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz operation, 2x2 MU-MIMO, Multi-Link Operation, and allowing up to 512 clients per radio. The Ibex-3520 takes wireless performance even further by offering tri-band Wi-Fi 7 capability, operating simultaneously on 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz, with 2x2 MU-MIMO, Multi-Link Operation up to 320 MHz, and advanced 4096-QAM modulation making it suitable for high-density passenger environments and data-intensive applications. The Ibex series also includes Bluetooth 5.2 and GNSS support, providing precise location data for advanced rail operations.

Both models are certified to EN 50155 (electrical safety) and EN 45545-2 (fire protection), ensuring suitability with stringent railway standards. They are engineered to withstand constant vibration, humidity, and electromagnetic interference, with features such as a GORE-TEX® membrane to prevent internal condensation and high-level isolation to protect against overvoltage and surges. Their rugged metal housing with IP66 protection, operation from -40°C to +70°C, and robust M12 connectors make these access points ideal for harsh onboard conditions.

Security, Applications, and Reliability

Security is a core focus, with advanced features such as WPA2/WPA3, 802.1X with RadSec, persistent security logs, and regular updates. Both devices are powered by the IbexOS operating system, which receives regular security updates, supporting secure and stable operation in mission-critical applications.

The Ibex-1520 and Ibex-3520 are ideal for passenger Wi-Fi, remote maintenance, data offloading, and integration into Train Control and Management Systems (TCMS), helping operators reduce downtime and operational costs. Their compact design contributes to low lifecycle costs and easy integration into space-restricted installations. Both products have undergone rigorous testing to meet EMC and other safety standards, ensuring reliable operation in challenging railway environments.
