Comneon, Infineon partner with FSMLabs to Extend the Reach of Linux-based Mobile Phone Solutions into the Mid-Range and Low-End Segments
Companies will demonstrate combined solution during 3GSM World Congress at the Infineon Technologies booth Hall1, stand B19
Barcelona, Spain, February 12, 2007 – Comneon, a leading supplier of protocol stack software for mobile communications, Infineon a leading provider of communication ICs, and FSMLabs, the provider of RTLinux® for hard real-time performance running on embedded systems devices, today announced that they have jointly integrated and demonstrated a single core Linux solution on a highly efficient mobile phone platform.  This achievement demonstrates the capability of Linux to also address the high volume and cost sensitive mid-range and low-end segments of the mobile phone market.

The three companies will demonstrate the capabilities of the single core Linux solution at the Infineon booth, Hall 1, stand B19, during the 3GSM World Congress, February 12-15, Barcelona, Spain.  The demonstration consists of FSMLabs’ RTLinux® running the essential modem software on the Infineon scalable, Linux-based MP-Elite single-core architecture that is powered by the S-GOLD®Radio, the world’s first single-chip solution with integrated EDGE baseband and RF transceiver. The platform is optimized for less MIPS consumption and compressed memory requirements to fit the stringent performance criteria of single core phones.

The form factor phone designed around the Infineon MP-Elite represents a full feature multimedia Linux reference integration and is the first Open OS phone platform for feature phones in its price range.  The platform will support video streaming and telephony on a single processor for modem and application functionality.  It offers all of the benefits of embedded Linux running on a conventional chipset family.

“By eliminating the need for a dedicated application processor or even a multimedia companion, the MP-Elite’s unique architecture provides a competitive mobile phone solution which offers the opportunity to significantly reduce the costs associated with Linux-based mobile handsets,” said Clemens Jargon, Vice President of the business unit Feature Phone at Infineon Technologies.

“The short development time and reduced effort required to demonstrate this innovative Linux platform underscore the advantages of Comneon’s modular, highly portable Protocol Stack software architecture,” said Dr. Christian Mucke, Managing Director of Comneon.  “Our protocol stack family now supports full featured operating systems (OS), in addition to native real-time OSs, bringing the number of supported platform combinations beyond 20.  Our customers can more easily consolidate their platform portfolio on a single, mature and market-proven protocol stack software.”

”RTLinux® provides a common vendor-neutral approach for single core mobile phones by offering extensions and a non-GPL home for the modem communications stack, in addition to offering highest performance and security guarantees, said Jason Whitmire, Managing Director at FSMLabs.  “We have waited a long time for a full-featured platform to finally support single core Linux implementations, so I am pleased that FSMLabs has partnered with Infineon and Comneon to be the first to prove the merits of this architecture for the feature phone space.”
