ERNI Electronics with extended COM portfolio
Extensions in the value and high-end range
Adelberg, Nuremberg, February 18, 2014 – At Embedded World in Nuremberg (25 February to 27 February 2014, Hall 4, Stand 348), ERNI Electronics is presenting extensions within the scope of its WHITEspeed COM family. This sees the current modules being complemented with new variants both for higher performance and also for highly cost-sensitive applications.

The pin-compatible ARM-based mezzanine modules differ essentially in terms of the CPU performance (clock frequency, number of cores, coprocessors) and I/Os and/or memory configurations. In addition, a completely equipped, adaptable baseboard is available, which can also be supplied with an optional display. The WHITEspeed 1.0 interface for the baseboard is realized with four MicroSpeed signal connectors and one MicroSpeed power module. The following are supported: Ethernet 10Mbit/100Mbit/1Gbit, SATA, PCIe x1/x4, Express Card, UART, USB 2.0 High Speed, CAN, I2C, SMB (System Management Bus), SPI, LVDS LCD display, SDVO (Serial Digital Video Out), HDA (High Definition Audio), SecureDigital memory card interface, GPIOs, RESET, watchdog, PWM and optionally a camera interface.

The current modules (CA8-1/Min and CA8-1/Max respectively) offer in credit card format (85 mm x 55 mm) a powerful i.MX537 CPU from Freescale with an ARM Cortex-A8 core (up to 800 MHz at -40°C to 85°C). The memory configuration includes DDR3-RAM (512 MB or 1 GB), reliable NOR flash memory (64 or 128 MB) for the boot code, NAND flash and I2C-EEPROM with up to 128 kB for the configuration data. The CPUs also feature extensive power management functions.

At the top end of the range, the family is now being extended with a high-performance module based on a Freescale i.MX6 CPU with a Cortex A9 core. This high-end solution is available as one, two or four-core version and constitutes the perfect upgrade to the current CA8-1 modules. The multimedia-capable COM modules support sound, graphics and touch displays. It is possible to control two displays simultaneously by HDMI and LVDS.

On the basis of a Cortex-A5 the other new module is ideally suited as a successor for ARM9 and ARM11 solutions. Offering exceptional value for money, this COM variant offers various interfaces for peripherals and additional GPIOs.

The two new modules will be available from late 2014, either individually or as a development kit along with the WHITEspeed baseboard. Board support packages offer design support.

ERNI Electronics will extend the WHITEspeed family in order to cater to a broad spectrum of applications.
