ERNI Offers Vertical RoHS-compliant D-Sub Connectors
Economical interface solutions for SMT applications
Adelberg, Germany, December 21, 2004 – As part of the redesign of its entire line of D-Subminiature connectors, ERNI is offering a series of vertical D-Sub models for SMT applications. They feature press-fit, surface-mount technology (SMT) and through-hole reflow (THR) terminals, and join the right-angle male and female D-Subs that are already available.

ERNI provides these new vertical D-Subs to help its customers reduce the cost of manufacturing printed circuit boards. With these new products, customers can also process vertical D-Sub versions within the SMT production line (e.g. inline production).

Designed for production efficiency and reliability

For fully automatic pick-and-place, the new vertical D-sub connectors are delivered with tray or tape-on-reel packaging that is well suited for automated processing. A large, integrated suction hood enables easy and reliable pick-up with the vacuum pipette during mounting. The insulator body is made of high-temperature-resistant LCP thermoplastic, and is designed for soldering with all commonly used SMT soldering processes. Together with the tin-plated terminals, the black insulator body and black suction hood offer strong contrast for reliable optical recognition.

For increased reliability, a metal mounting bracket with a large surface relieves the strains arising from plug-in, removal, and cable handling. Furthermore, the integrated interlock hardware accessories ensure reliable fastening of the cable housings on the connector.

The new generation of D Sub connectors is suitable for conventional tin/lead soldering and already meets the requirements for lead-free soldering in accordance with the RoHS specifications. These lead-free soldering requirements will be mandatory beginning in July 2006.

Choice of heights and positions

The new connectors are available with overall heights of 6.3mm or 9.0mm in compliance with DIN 41652 and CECC 75301-802 specifications. They are available with 9, 15, 25 or 37 positions. The contacts are gold-plated in the mating area and tin-plated in the termination area.
