IAR Platform Adds Native Cross-Platform IDE for Linux and Windows
Native Linux support for IAR's embedded IDE unifies desktop and CI development on a single certified toolchain across safety- and compliance-critical embedded projects.
Espoo, Finland, September 1, 2026 – Qt Group (Nasdaq, Helsinki: QTCOM) has announced today that IAR's certified embedded toolchain for safety-critical software development has extended native cross-platform support for its IDE, adding Linux alongside Windows. The capability also integrates directly with VS Code and its extension ecosystem.

Embedded software development is shifting toward automated, standardized build processes that increasingly run in Linux-based continuous integrations (CI) environments. Qt Group is seeing customers move the same way. Certified compiler toolchains and debuggers, as a category, have not kept pace. This left engineering organizations working across split environments: Windows for desktop development, Linux for CI, or relying on workarounds to bridge the gap.

With native Linux support, IAR removes the trade-off entirely: the same certified toolchain, the same reproducible binary results, and the same compliance posture across every developer workstation and build server. Built on the Qt Framework, the IAR Cross-platform IDE renders a true native UI on every supported OS, with the certified compiler and debugger built directly into the IDE. Organizations gain a single standardized environment across mixed-OS teams, broader access to embedded engineering talent, and reduced infrastructure complexity. The underlying toolchain remains unchanged: CMake- and CI-ready by default, with trace depth and live, in-session debugging that safety- and compliance-critical programs depend on. That combination of certification, cross-platform reach, and trace depth is available exclusively within the IAR Platform.

“Modernizing a development workflow should not introduce risk into a certified project,” said Jakob Ågren, Chief Product Officer IAR at Qt Group. “Our customers are moving toward Linux-based infrastructure and CI-driven development, and they need to do that without re-validating their toolchain or weakening their compliance position. Extending the IAR Platform natively across Linux and Windows lets teams adopt modern workflows and keep the confidence they have already built.”
