HighTec Drives Automotive Software Development on Renesas RH850/U2x MCUs with LLVM-Based Rust and C/C++ Toolchains
Saarbruecken, Germany, March 9, 2026 – HighTec EDV-Systeme, a leading provider of automotive compiler solutions, closely cooperates with Renesas Electronics Corporation to further broaden its multi-architecture support by making the safety-qualified LLVM-based HighTec Rust and C/C++ compiler toolchain available for Renesas RH850/U2x microcontrollers. Embedded developers working on this high-performance 32-bit Automotive RH850 family from Renesas can now integrate memory-safe Rust with their existing C/C++ codebase. This hybrid approach enables fast innovation cycles in zone/domain controllers, powertrain, chassis or other safety-critical applications, especially in the context of software-defined vehicles (SDV).

The RH850/U2x series is a family of high-performance automotive microcontrollers which offer multi-core processing, functional safety features supporting system designs up to ASIL D, and advanced security features. They provide a scalable application platform for advanced functionalities while keeping system integration costs under control. The multi-language and multi-architecture HighTec Rust and C/C++ compiler utilizes the inherent features of the high performing Renesas architecture and generates highly efficient and deterministic code that ensures reliable execution in resource-constrained and safety-critical systems.

HighTec’s compiler tools are based on innovative open-source LLVM technology, which offers strong optimization capabilities and a broad tooling ecosystem. The automotive-grade tool suite is qualified according to ISO 26262 ASIL D (functional safety) and ISO 21434 (cybersecurity). It comes with a comprehensive Qualification Kit to simplify and accelerate the qualification process of automotive applications, while customers can also rely on HighTec’s long-term device support strategy.

Pioneer in Bringing Rust to Automotive Software

HighTec pioneers hybrid C/C++ and Rust development in automotive software, delivering memory-safe, robust, and secure embedded applications. With the addition of the Renesas RH850/U2x as the latest supported MCU family, HighTec enables automotive software developers for RH850/U2x to take full advantage of Rust in combination with C/C++. The new tool suite allows them to combine their legacy C/C++ code with modern Rust, providing a practical path to mixed-language automotive ECU software and supporting the migration of safety-critical applications to a future-proof codebase.

This applies also for AUTOSAR based solutions: With the HighTec compiler tools, software developers are enabled to build on their existing AUTOSAR infrastructure while implementing innovative software components in Rust. They promote the reuse of proven low-level C components, like MCALs from other silicon vendors, as well as Basic Software (BSW) and Runtime Environments (RTE) from partners like Vector Informatik.

Joining the Renesas Ecosystem

The support for RH850/U2x MCUs marks another milestone in HighTec’s engagement with the Renesas ecosystem. The HighTec Rust and C/C++ compiler integrates seamlessly into the Renesas IDE and supports modern CI/CD automation workflows within standard embedded development environments. On the other hand, Renesas offers their MCAL with support of HighTec's RH850 compiler. HighTec will continue to expand the support for additional Renesas microcontroller families, further strengthening its role as an indispensable partner within the Renesas ecosystem.

“Software-defined vehicles require scalable, secure, and future-ready development platforms,” said Sandra Stehr, Senior Manager, Product Marketing, Renesas Electronics. “The availability of HighTec’s Rust and C/C++ toolchain for the RH850/U2x family gives our customers additional options to modernize their software architectures while maintaining compatibility with their proven C-based software stacks and AUTOSAR infrastructures.”

“I am very happy that thanks to our close cooperation with Renesas, we are now adding support for the Renesas RH850/U2x MCU series in our widely used compiler tools for Rust and C/C++”, said Mario Cupelli, CTO of HighTec EDV-Systeme GmbH. “With our multi-architecture and multi-language offering, we provide maximum flexibility, especially for automotive software developers who want to make greater use of modern Rust in their safety-critical projects.”

Demo at embedded world 2026

At embedded world 2026 at booth 4-432 in hall 4, HighTec is presenting a practical live demo showing the interoperability of C and Rust on the Renesas RH850/U2x in a single embedded project. The demo combines proven low-level C drivers with a Rust application layer to showcase successful mixed-language automotive development workflows in a real-world setting.
