Infineon Reduces Power Consumption and Footprint Area of Tuner ICs for Portable Applications by 50 Percent
Munich, Germany & Shanghai, China - November 22, 2005 - Infineon Technologies AG (FSE/NYSE: IFX), a leading supplier of analog and digital tuner ICs (Integrated Circuits), today introduced the high performance, low power tuner ICs TUA6041 and TUA6045 specifically designed for portable applications such as laptops, USB dongles and PDAs. Both ICs are the industry’s first single conversion tuners operating at a supply voltage as low as 3V, halving their power consumption and heat dissipation. To meet the increasing space constraints of portable end-user devices, the TUA6041 and TUA6045 integrate the RF (Radio Frequency) and IF (Intermediate Frequency) functions in one chip improving system reliability and decreasing the footprint area of the tuner IC by around 50 percent to 49 mm².

Live demonstrations of the new Infineon TUA6041 and TUA6045 will be exhibited at the China Digital Consumer Electronics Component Exhibition in Shanghai (November 22-25, 2005, booth 1CG7).

“Our new tuner ICs fulfill the requirements of portable television receivers with regards to footprint, performance and low power consumption,” said Giuseppe Calarco, General Manager of the Business Unit Tuner Systems at Infineon’s Communication Business Group. “Eight out of ten of the world’s 12 million TV sets and set-top boxes for terrestrial digital television already operate with components from Infineon. We are committed to leverage this expertise and to offer our customers leading edge tuner solutions that enable a broad range of portable and mobile applications. We are also committed to supporting analog and digital as well as other various regional standards,” he added.

According to a report of market research firm Gartner Dataquest shipments of handheld computers, video game handhelds and laptops are expected to grow from approximately 97 million units in 2005 to approximately 145 million units in 2010.
Both tuner ICs address multiple analog and digital TV standards (PAL, SECAM, NTSC, DVB-C, DVB-T, T-DMB, DAB, ISDB-T and ATSC), hence enabling highest flexibility for portable end-user equipment, set-top-Boxes as well as new digital TVs with integrated tuners in the transition phase from the analog to the digital TV world. Besides, hybrid tuners used for analog as well as digital broadcasting receptions can rely on only one TUA6045 component to receive both analog and digital signals with the appropriate demodulators.

Operating at a supply voltage from 5.5V to as low as 3V allows manufacturers of tuners and end-user equipment to adjust the tuner IC according to the system’s power requirements. Power consumption of the end-user equipment is further reduced thanks to the stand-by mode function of the tuner IC while a selectable narrow or wide band Automatic Gain Control (AGC) improves the TV reception quality. In addition to manual alignment, the TUA6041 features automatic digital alignment by the means of software during basic set-up in the production process - a feature addressing mainly end-user equipment manufacturers as it avoids the manual alignment in their manufacturing process.

Samples of the TUA6041 and TUA6045 are available now. Volume production is planned for the end of Calendar Year 2005.
