Secure measurements on high-voltage batteries
IPETRONIK: "SAM-HViso DC" DC high voltage divider passes
04 February 2010 - IPETRONIK, the world’s leading manufacturer of mobile measurement technology in the automotive industry, announced that the “SAM-HViso DC1000” high voltage divider has successfully passed the safety testing performed by TÜV SÜD. This examination was conducted in accordance with the safety standards for electrical devices for test, measurement, control and laboratory tasks in accordance with the EN 61010-1, EN 61010-031 standard. This confirms in detail that all the components are isolated, that the dimensions of the clearance and creepage distances are sufficient and that the device passed the electric strength test. Consequently, the device may also be used in 230/400 VAC/ 50 Hz power networks.

SAM-HViso DC1000 is a high voltage divider with full electrical isolation that allows reliable voltage measurement for batteries and DC power circuits in electric and hybrid vehicles. The new solution consists of two components that is used as a cut-in module for measurements on high-voltage systems. The first component, the ISO voltage divider, is an electrically isolating amplifier. This is used as a pre-stage for standard voltage-measurement modules, and has the advantage of allowing continued use of the existing measuring equipment. The second part is an intrinsically safe measurement cable with current-limiting resistors at the terminal points. The characteristics of these resistors are chosen in a way to keep the leakage current below the level that would be injurious to persons, in case of a damaged measurement cable.

The ISO voltage divider is enclosed in a 100 mm x 51 mm x 25 mm (L x W x H) housing. It conforms to Protection Class IP67, and works in the temperature range of –20 °C to +70 °C. Further technical specifications for the new solution are a standard measuring range of ±1000 V, a continuous isolation voltage of ±1100 V, and a test isolation voltage (1 s) of ±2500 V. The amplifier impedance is 20 MΩ//20 pF, and the measurement input impedance is 21 MΩ//(20 pF + approx. 100 pF/m). The signal frequency is in the area of 2 kHz for a length of one meter of measuring cable.

“The fast-paced development for electric and hybrid vehicles confronts test and measurement technicians with completely new voltage potentials. Whereas in the past, an isolation voltage of 500 V was usually sufficient, that is no longer the case with new vehicle concepts with voltages of up to 1000 V. In this range, galvanic isolation is indispensable, because large differences in potential lead to falsified measurement results. Furthermore, short circuiting and other damage can occur if the galvanic isolation is insufficient,” said Andreas Geh, director of sales & marketing at IPETRONIK. “The SAM-HViso DC1000 high-voltage divider for direct current is the ideal solution for electric and hybrid vehicles, because it makes it possible to perform reliable measurements on DC circuits for high voltage batteries.”

Member of the AMA Association for Sensor Technology

Since mid November 2009, IPETRONIK has also been a member of the AMA Association for Sensor Technology. This industry association seeks to represent the interests of all who deal with technical testing and measurement systems (measuring or control) anywhere in the value chain for any kind of application. From basic research to manufacturers and service providers, and from micro technologies to sensor elements, complex measurement, testing and controlling systems and all the way to electric actuators, the organization covers all stages of the value chain for sensors and measurement technology. The AMA association has approx. 450 members. Of these, about 80 % are industrial companies and 20 % are R&D institutes.
About IPETRONIK

Since its founding in 1983, IPETRONIK GmbH & Co.KG has had a profound impact on the technology that the automotive industry uses to perform mobile measurements. Today, IPETRONIK is one of the world’s leading companies in this sector. Since 1999, IPETRONIK has been a subsidiary of INDUS Holding AG with headquarters in Bergisch Gladbach, Germany. This group includes a total of 41 mid-size companies from different segments of the economy. This provides IPETRONIK with a sturdy foundation and with financial backing for strategic projects and for investments in both new and existing locations. For years now, nearly all car manufacturers have been relying on the high dependability, precision, and availability of IPETRONIK’s products and services. The company’s comprehensive portfolio of measurement modules, data loggers, sensors and software combines modular measurement equipment of the highest accuracy with expertise in analog measurement technology and automotive data busses for commonly used automotive networks – including the relevant communication protocols for control units. By continuously expanding its Consulting/Engineering division, IPETRONIK has increasingly been able to serve as a technology partner with a broad range of services for the automotive industry. These activities focus on vehicle test equipment, including general testing and both on- and off-road test runs, with an emphasis on vehicle air-conditioning and thermal management. At company headquarters in the Southern German city of Baden-Baden, about 100 employees develop innovative solutions that are then produced in Germany. To ensure that it fulfills its commitment to provide global sales backed up by local customer care, IPETRONIK operates subsidiaries in France, Sweden and the US and works together with a growing worldwide network of distributors.
